In the fall of 1988, Don Reed performed stand-up comedy at the NACA, and the Sinbad actor impressed him so much that he signed Reed to appear in an episode of the TV spin-off The Cosby Show Two called “A Different World”. He played Denise Huxtable’s love interest “Chip St. Charles”. This was Reed’s television debut; he left the show in 1989. Reed also appeared in the HBO television special Dream On in 1990, and later appeared as a drug lord in the HBO television specials Robert Townsend Adventures: Robert Townsend and His Partners in Crime (1991) and Meteor Man (1993). Reed was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards: One in 1989 for “Dream On”, “The Cosby Show”, and “Robert Townsend and His Partners in Crime”. Reed spent two years as a commercial and broadcast director at NBC, then lent his voice to Disney’s “Gargoyles,” “Spider-Man” and “The True Adventures of Johnny Quest.”
Reed’s film credits include “Unleash the Fear of the Black Hat” and “Once Upon a Time in the Woods.” Reed also joined the cast of NBC’s revival show. His thoughts include Mike Tyson, Sherman Hemsley, Todd Bridges, Chris Rock and more. In 2008, he launched his first autobiographical show, “East 14: The True Story of a Serious Actor,” and has had a total of 5 solo shows to date. In the fall of 2009, he became a hot guest on the Jay Leno Show. He was the first warm-up performer to appear on an early-night show (The Tonight Show with Jay Leno) and has done stand-up to warm up audiences for 1,000 episodes. In 2016, he won the NPR/WNYC Show of the Year Award from Snap Judgement. Later that year, the Bay Area Theatre gave him the 2016 TBA Best Play Award for his show East 14th. That same year, Reed starred in the Amazon Prime comedy series “The Bartlett” alongside Broadway talent Lin-Manuel Miranda (creator of “Hamilton”). In 2019, writer/director/filmmaker Robert Townsend approached Don Reed about producing one of his popular shows, Live in Conversation.
