For his career accomplishments and more than 25 years of community involvement, he was honored at the Sports Emmy Awards presentation. It is the highest distinction bestowed by the Emmy Awards organization. Harris was named best commentary, best sports special, and best sportscast by the Associated Press in 2017. For his sports anchoring, storytelling, and comments, he has won and been nominated for Emmys. In addition to his signature, he has garnered multiple Texas A.P. Broadcasters honors for outstanding sportscast and best sports narrative.

Harris founded the Don Harris Golf Classic in 1998, a golf tournament that benefits a variety of charities, including the Arthritis Foundation and The Family Service Association, The Autism Treatment Center, S.A. Youth, and the First Tee of San Antonio.
Over a million dollars was raised for local children thanks to the participation of many notable local sports superstars. Harris is also a member of the Harvey E. Najim Family Foundation and San Antonio Sports boards, as well as the advisory board of the Miracle League of San Antonio.
