Purtan’s mix of witty banter and music was rapidly noticed, and he was promoted to morning drive within two months. Purtan’s show was cited as one of the country’s top-rated morning shows in the 1970s, competing with personalities whose stations broadcasted significantly more powerful signals.

Purtan eventually moved to WXYZ/Detroit, where he worked a seven-hour day that included both morning and afternoon shifts. He worked at CKLW/Detroit-Windsor as well. Despite the fact that he was technically working for radio stations, Purtan prioritized humor and dialogue over current songs.

Purtan spent 13 years at WKQI/Detroit, where he established himself as the city’s top morning host, before relocating to WOMC/Detroit in 1996, where “Purtan’s People” remained the city’s top-rated morning show well into the new century.
