Her husband died on 1 January 2020, at age 77. Stern was blown up by a brain hemorrhage and underwent emergency operations in Manhattan, where he died. All NBA teams, commemorating Stern, wore black band sticks on their jerseys, for the remainder of the 2019–20 season.
