Dewayne Perkins, an American comedian, writer, actor, and producer, was born on November 5, 1990. As an actor, he has been in Peacock’s Saved By the Bell, Netflix’s The Upshaws, and Lionsgate/MRC’s The Blackening, a film he created and co-produced that debuted at TIFF.

Perkins was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up on the south side, near Marquette Park. He attended Hearst Elementary School before graduating from Curie High School. He attended The Theatre School at DePaul University but was cut after his first year and changed his major to film and animation. He is the co-writer and star of horror-comedy film The Blackening. Perkins continued to work at Second City, act at iO theater, and be a member of the improv duo 3Peat after graduating from college. In 2016, he wrote and performed Black Side of the Moon at the Woolly Mammoth Theater in Washington, DC. In April 2018, Comedy Central premiered 3Peat’s sketch The Blackening, which follows “an all-Black group of friends (who ain’t got no business camping) as they get chased by a serial killer.” The sketch was based on a variety show skit Perkins created at Second City. In 2018, he was contracted to write for the lone season of Michelle Wolf’s The Break. He eventually moved to Los Angeles and joined the writing staff for the seventh season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
Perkins wrote for The Amber Ruffin Show and the Saved By the Bell revival, both of which were released on Peacock in 2020. Perkins created a viral Twitter thread in June 2020, accusing The Second City of systematic racism. He reportedly “criticized Second City prior’s reluctance to fundraise for the Black Lives Matter movement without also financially supporting police-related causes.” He claimed that he and other Black performers had to attend a dialect coach to make their speaking sounds more “palatable.” He also told The New York Times that he had witnessed directors utter anti-Black insults and was horrified by his overall experience. Several additional Black performers responded to the topic.
