Derryn Hinch Cancer – Illness
Hinch lost weight and his health deteriorated in 2006. On March 4, 2007, he disclosed on 60 Minutes that he had advanced cirrhosis of the liver and that a tumor had been discovered on his liver. Hinch returned to the hospital on April 27, 2007, for more scans. Hinch stated on August 4, 2007, that he had inoperable liver cancer.
On September 20, 2010, Hinch confirmed the diagnosis of liver cancer and stated that he anticipated to undergo surgery to remove a third of his liver, which would keep him off the air for several weeks. Doctors estimated that he had a 60% chance of surviving another five years.
Hinch told his listeners on November 4, 2010, that his physicians had advised him that without a liver transplant, his chances of survival were only 12 months. Hinch underwent liver transplant surgery at Melbourne’s Austin Hospital on July 6, 2011.
Derryn Hinch Justice Party
Hinch founded Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party in 2015 and was elected to the Australian Senate as senator for Victoria in the 2016 double dissolution election on July 2, 2016. He became the oldest freshly elected member of the Australian parliament.
His party’s main focus is on criminal justice reform, which includes harsher punishments for violent and sexual offenders, no bail for individuals charged of a serious violent offense, parole reform, and a public registry of sex offenders. Other perspectives include equal rights for all people regardless of ethnicity, religion, or sexual orientation, stricter animal cruelty legislation, and support for voluntary euthanasia.
Following the publication of the Senate election results in 2016, other Senators negotiated, over Hinch’s protests, to give him a three-year Senate term rather than a six-year Senate term.
During the dual citizenship problem, it was revealed in August 2017 that Hinch has an American Social Security number, prompting worries that he may be disqualified from office under Section 44 of the Australian Constitution. However, the Attorney-General decided not to submit him to the High Court in September 2017.

In 1987, Hinch was sentenced to 12 days in prison and fined A$15,000 for contempt of court for publicly disclosing paedophile Roman Catholic priest Michael Charles Glennon’s past conviction while a trial was still pending. In June 2011, he was found guilty of violating suppression orders against the names of two sex offenders and sentenced to five months in home detention.
Hinch was found guilty of contempt of court in October 2013 for violating a suppression order by exposing data about Jill Meagher’s killer, Adrian Ernest Bayley’s criminal history. Hinch was given 90 days to pay the fee or face 50 days in prison, according to the judge.
On January 16, 2014, one day before the 90-day term expired, Hinch stated that he would not pay the fee “on principle.” On January 17, 2014, he was imprisoned. He was freed from prison on March 7, 2014, after serving his entire sentence. His partner Natasha Chadwick, several friends, and a large media contingent met him.
