The majority of McGinty’s early career was spent as the host of The Derek McGinty Show, a radio talk show that aired on WAMU in Washington from 1991 to 1998.There, he hosted segments with “the computer guys,” covered regional and national politics, and welcomed a wide range of unique visitors.Prior to that, he worked as a newscaster for Howard University’s commercial radio station, WHUR-FM. McGinty made his CBS news program debut as a freelance reporter on Public Eye with Bryant Gumbel in October 1997. He finally made the switch permanent after a few months, departing WAMU in January 1998. After moving to New York City, McGinty started working for ABC News. He could be seen on WUSA’s Eye on Washington, HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, and ABC’s World News Now[4] and World News This Morning. Although his contract to anchor on-air news was not renewed in August 2015, he declared that he would still host WUSA’s Sunday morning program Capital Download.
