Derek Hough is a professional American ballroom and Latin dancer, actor, choreographer, and singer. Between 2007 and 2016, he participated in the ABC dancing competition series Dancing with the Stars, winning six records. He was nominated fourteen times for the Primetime Emmy Awards, which is given to the best choreography. After that, Hough joined the show as a judge for its 29th season.

Hough’s Childhood, Parents- Education
Hough was raised in Sandy, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, as the fourth of five children in a household of Latter-day Saints. He is the son of Marianne and Bruce Hough, who ran for Utah’s 2nd congressional district in 2023 and served as the party’s chairman twice. Sharee, Marabeth, Katherine, and Julianne are his sisters. His parents met while competing on a ballroom dance team in college in Idaho, and all of his grandparents were dancers. The musicians Riker, Rydel, Rocky, Ryland Lynch, and Ross Lynch from R5 are his second cousins; their mother grandmothers are sisters.
Hough’s parents took him to London when he was twelve years old so he could study dance with Corky and Shirley Ballas. Along with his sister Julianne, he stayed for eleven years. Mark, one of the Hough family’s children, received tutoring from the Ballases at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. They were trained in acting, singing, dancing, gymnastics, and theater.

Hough World of Dance
Hough, Jennifer Lopez, Ne-Yo, and host/mentor Jenna Dewan became judges on NBC’s new dancing competition series World of dancing in May 2017. It was the most watched premiere in nine years and the highest-rated new summer alternative series in five years on television. It was renewed for a second season, followed by a third and a fourth.
Hough Dancing with the Stars
Hough joined Julianne and Apolo Anton Ohno as a guest instructor on Dancing with the Stars during season four. In season five, he became a member of the professional instructor cast and was paired with Jennie Garth. Hough was teamed with Shannon Elizabeth for season six, but they lost in the semifinals. Hough was paired with Mirror Ball trophy winner Brooke Burke in season seven.
Hough was paired with rapper Lil’ Kim for season eight, however the two were ousted in the semi-finals. Hough was paired with model Joanna Krupa for season nine, but the two were ousted in the semifinals. Hough won the competition in 2010 while paired with The Pussycat Dolls’ lead vocalist, Nicole Scherzinger, in season ten.
Hough and Jennifer Grey took home the trophy for the third time in season eleven. Due to his involvement in the movie COBU 3D (eventually renamed to Make your Move 3D), he was unable to participate in season 12. Hough teamed up with Ricki Lake, who played Tracy Turnblad in the movie Hairspray, in season 13. Hough declared in season 15 that it would be his final one. He made the announcement in 2013 that he would return for season 16, collaborating with country music artist Kellie Pickler. Hough teamed up with Glee actress Amber Riley in season 17, and the pair took home the Mirror Ball trophy for the sixth time.
Hough’s partner in season 18 was paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy, however the two finished second in the grand final. Hough and Bethany Mota were the losing team in season 19, as they were ousted on the first night of the finals.
Hough’s return as a professional dancer for season 20 was announced in 2015. He joined forces with wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin in season 21, however they were disqualified in the championship round. Alongside actress Marilu Henner, Hough made a comeback to the professional dance scene in 2016 for season 23, but they were ousted in sixth place.
Hough Move Live On Tour
Hough and his sister Julianne announced a summer tour in the United States and Canada called “Move Live on Tour” in 2014. Dancers were selected through tryouts for the trip, which included singing and dancing. The trip finished in Los Angeles, California, having started in Park City, Kansas. Nappytabs and the Hough siblings worked together to choreograph the tour.
The Houghs announced a comeback tour in 2015 that would stop in more than 40 cities and larger venues. Reunited as a team of choreographers, Tabitha and Napoleon D’umo, aka “Nappytabs” A fresh group of dancers was recruited through auditions, and several backup dancers were brought back.
The goal of the Houghs’ 2016 “Move Interactive” free fitness pop-up event in Los Angeles was to infuse human connection, love, health, and community into daily life. Workouts, a 2-mile run, and a dance fitness class at JustDance Los Angeles were all part of the event. The Houghs hosted a second free Move Interactive event, complete with team-building activities and a hike, at Fryman Canyon, LA, in July 2016. They revealed a new tour, “MOVE BEYOND Live on Tour,” for 2017 on December 14, 2016.
