Denis Leary is an American actor and comedian who rose to notoriety as a stand-up comedian, particularly through appearances on MTV and the stand-up specials No Cure for Cancer and Lock ‘n Load. Leary began acting in cinema and television in the 1990s, including notable parts in Judgment Night, Gunmen, Operation Dumbo Drop, and Wag the Dog.

Leary was born on August 18, 1957, in Worcester, Massachusetts, as the son of Catholic immigrants from Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. His mother, Nora (née Sullivan) (born 1929), was a maid, and his father, John Leary, was an auto mechanic. Leary holds dual citizenship in the United States and Ireland. Leary is a third cousin of talk show host and comedian Conan O’Brien.
Leary attended Saint Peter’s High School (now Saint Paul’s) in Worcester before graduating from Emerson College in Boston. At Emerson, he met fellow comic Mario Cantone, whom Leary regards as his closest friend. Leary formed the Emerson Comedy Workshop while a student, and the ensemble still performs on campus today. After graduating from Emerson in 1981, Leary taught comedy-writing seminars there for five years.

Leary has been married to the author Ann Lembeck Leary since 1989. They met at Emerson College, where he taught her English. They have two children: son John Joseph “Jack” born in 1990 and daughter Devin in 1992. Ann Leary wrote a book, An Innocent, a Broad, about their son’s early delivery on a visit to London. She also wrote a novel called Outtakes From a Marriage, which was published in 2008. Her second novel, The Good House, debuted in 2013. Her New York Times column writing about her marriage to Denis served as the inspiration for Episode 4 of the Modern Love series, “Rallying to Keep the Game Alive”.

He appeared as Sean Moody Sr. in the American comedy television series The Moodys. It premiered on Fox on December 4, 2019, and broadcast two half-hour episodes back-to-back for three weeks, totaling six episodes in its inaugural season. Fox renewed the series in July 2020 for a second season, which will broadcast on April 1, 2021. The series was initially titled A Moody Christmas; the Australian series on which it is based was called A Moody Christmas in its first season. On April 16, 2021, Fox removed The Moodys from the Thursday lineup. The final three episodes of the second season will air on Sundays beginning June 6. On June 17, 2021, the show was discontinued after two seasons. The series’ finale aired on June 20, 2021.
Rescue Me
He appeared as Thomas Michael “Tommy” Gavin, FDNY Firefighter, 1st Grade, Ladder Company 62 in American dramedy television series Rescue Me. The show follows Tommy’s problematic family and coworkers as they struggle with real-life concerns like post-9/11 trauma and their own domestic troubles. Tommy is dealing with the death of his cousin and best friend, firefighter Jimmy Keefe, as well as 59 other firefighters he knew who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Jimmy frequently visits Tommy in his haunted dreams.
Tommy is a relapsed alcoholic who is irritable, self-loathing, hypocritical, and manipulative. He also suffers from significant survivor guilt and posttraumatic stress disorder caused by 9/11. In the premiere episode, he and his wife Janet have already separated, though they are still legally married, and Tommy has relocated across the street. Tommy’s efforts as a firefighter are mostly courageous and brave, but his family and fellow firefighters regard him as selfish, despite his concern for others and enthusiasm for the work.
