Dawnn Lewis is an American actress, voice actress, singer, and songwriter, from the United States. Lewis is best known for her role as Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor on the NBC television sitcom A Different World, which she played from 1987 until the end of its fifth season in 1992, as well as for co-writing the series’ opening theme.

Dawnn Lewis made her breakthrough as Jaleesa Vinson in NBC’s sitcom ‘A Different World’ in 1987. She appeared in the first five seasons of the six-season series and co-wrote the theme song with Stu Gardner and Bill Cosby. Following an appearance on the game show “Super Password,” she was cast as Robin Dumars on ABC’s “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper.” Lewis, along with Holly Robinson and En Vogue, also performed the season 1 theme song.
The actress appeared in ‘The 10th Kingdom,’ a five-part miniseries. Six years later, she was cast as Deloris Van Cartier in ‘Sister Act the Musical,’ which premiered at the Pasadena Playhouse. She also appeared in the film adaptation of the musical ‘Dreamgirls’ that year.

Lewis appeared in the TV drama ‘One Tree Hill’ in 2009. She had a recurring role in the popular drama ‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ a year later. She portrayed Dr. Knapp on NBC’s daytime soap opera ‘Days of Our Lives’ from 2012 to 2013. From 2014 to 2018, the actress played Patrice, Lt. Provenza’s love interest on ‘Major Crimes.’ Lewis has done a lot of voice work. Storm of the X-Men has been voiced by her in three video games. She has also appeared in the TV shows “The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy,” “Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm,” “Futurama,” and “Spider-Man: The Animated Series.”

In 2012, she voiced the character of Malora in the animated film ‘Strange Frame’. This was followed by her subsequent voice roles in ‘Doc McStuffins’, ‘Bunyan and Babe’ and ‘Spirit Riding Free’. In 2019, Lewis began voicing The Chief on Netflix’s action-adventure animated series ‘Carmen Sandiego’.
