He has also contributed to other publications, such as Nieman Reports.David began his career as a radio and television reporter for WTIC in Hartford, Connecticut, which was later purchased by Post-Newsweek and renamed WFSB-TV. From 1978 to 2000, he worked as a reporter for WCVB-TV in Boston. David became an environmental news expert and was an early member of the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ). David received two Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards for excellence in television journalism while at WCVB. He also received a national Gabriel Award, two National Headliner Awards (including Best of Show), and seven regional Emmy Awards.
Ropeik joined the Harvard School of Public Health in January 2000 as the Center for Risk Analysis’s Director of Communications and a faculty member of the school’s professional education course “The Risk Communication Challenge.” He went on to become a risk communication instructor at the school and the co-director of the Risk Communication challenge course. He has taught courses on risk media coverage at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, the Nieman Fellowship Program, The Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT, Boston University’s Program in Science Journalism, Emerson College, the Council for the Advancement of Science Writers, the National Association of Science Writers, and the Society of Environmental Journalists.
Ropeik co-wrote the book “RISK, A Practical Guide for Deciding What’s Dangerous and What’s Safe in the World Around You,” published by Houghton Mifflin in 2002, with the then-director of the Center for Risk Analysis, George Gray. Ropeik departed the School of Public Health in 2006, although he continues to teach at the Harvard Extension School. He is presently a consultant for the government, business, trade associations, consumer groups, and educational institutions. He has authored dozens of risk perception articles.[16] Ropeik is also the author of “How Risky Is It Really?” Why Our Fears Don’t Always Match the Facts,” published by McGraw Hill in March 2010.
He was a risk communication member of the Congressionally mandated Veterans Affairs Board on Dose Reconstruction, which administers the joint Department of Defense and Veterans Health Administration program to recompense nuclear-exposed veterans. He served on the Advisory Board of the America Prepared campaign, a collaboration between the Department of Homeland Security, the Advertising Council, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and a group of businesses and individuals.
