Mendenhall started his acting career at the age of four. In 1979, he auditioned and got the part of Mike Webber on the soap drama General Hospital. He stayed with the series until 1986. During this time, Mendenhall began performing in feature films. Mendenhall made his cinematic debut in Space Raiders, a 1983 space western produced by Roger Corman. Notable television appearances in the 1980s included playing Elaine Nardo’s son on Taxi for three episodes and a 12-year-old heroin dealer in “The Reporter,” a particularly special episode of the sitcom Diff’rent Strokes. The show included a guest appearance by then-First Lady Nancy Reagan.

At the age of 15, Mendenhall played Sylvester Stallone’s son in the 1987 sports drama Over the Top, about a long-haul truck driver who strives to win back his estranged son by becoming a champion arm wrestling. That same year, he starred in the comedy Going Bananas alongside Dom DeLuise and Jimmie Walker. Mendenhall and Sally Kellerman collaborated on the 1989 film The Secret of the Ice Cave, which was shot in Chile. Cannon Films produced all three movies. Mendenhall co-starred with Christina Applegate in the 1989 drama Streets, which was produced by Roger Corman. Mendenhall had a two-season recurrent role in the NBC drama Our House, which starred Wilford Brimley.

Mendenhall has since worked in the legal divisions of various entertainment corporations, such as NBCUniversal Television Group and Buena Vista Home Entertainment. He worked as the clearance coordinator for NBC’s Deal or No Deal from 2007 to 2008. Following that, he worked in the prize department on GSN Live for the Game Show Network, and then as a prize producer for NBC and Fox. In 2012, he returned to acting for a brief cameo in Bobcat Goldthwait’s God Bless America.
