His faith in the paranormal stems from the alleged kidnapping of his sister Samantha Mulder by extraterrestrials when Mulder was 12 years old. Mulder is obsessed with her kidnapping for the majority of the series. Mulder struggles to maintain objectivity in his investigations as a result of this, as well as more nebulous desires for vindication and the revelation of truths kept hidden by human authorities. Scully is a medical doctor who is also a natural skeptic. She is initially partnered with Mulder in order to debunk Mulder’s nonconforming theories. Charlie asks Emma to shoplift in order to test her loyalty, and when she is caught, Charlie murders the owner.
