After graduating from Northwestern, Chalian worked for NY1, a 24-hour cable news channel based in New York City, where he produced the nightly news program Inside City Hall. He later became ABC News’ political director and appeared as a political analyst on ABC World News Tonight, Nightline, and Good Morning America. At ABC, he produced and co-anchored the daily political webcast “Top Line”. He received an Emmy Award in January 2009 for his contributions to ABC News’ coverage of the presidential inauguration. He went on to work as a political editor and on-air political analyst for the PBS NewsHour before becoming Vice President of Video Programming at Politico.

Chalian was the Washington bureau chief for Yahoo! News, but he was fired after being overheard on a live microphone during an online broadcast from the 2012 Republican National Convention saying that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and his wife Ann Romney were “not concerned at all” and “happy to have a party with black people drowning” during hurricane Isaac.  Chalian later apologized for his words, adding, “I am deeply sorry for making such an insensitive and foolish joke. I was discussing the difficulty of having a convention during a cyclone, as well as campaign optics. I apologized to the Romney campaign, and I’d like to publicly apologize to Governor and Mrs. Romney.
