Dave Ramsey Career

Ramsey went through a period of financial recovery and started giving financial advise to couples at his church. He created the Lampo Group, a financial consulting firm, in 1988, and his first book, Financial Peace, was self-published in 1992. Ramsey began hosting The Money Game on radio station WWTN/Nashville in 1992 as one of three alternating hosts. The Dave Ramsey Show, Ramsey’s daily three-hour call-in financial advice talk show, evolved from the show.

Ramsey’s nine-lesson, $129.99 video-based personal finance course, Financial Peace University, began in 1994. Ramsey’s financial column was published by the Gannett newspaper group, but it was discontinued after it was discovered that Ramsey had changed the names on the letters he was responding to. He offered to reimburse them for their money.

From 2007 through 2010, The Dave Ramsey Show aired on Fox Business Network. Ramsey Solutions was renamed The Lampo Group, Inc. in 2014. The company’s headquarters are in Franklin, Tennessee, and it just constructed a new 47-acre site there. Ramsey recommends listeners to start paying off debt by adopting the debt snowball strategy, which involves paying off the smallest bills first.

Ramsey is adamant about not using credit cards. He occasionally pulls out his wallet during live performances to reveal the “only four pieces of plastic” he carries: a company debit card, a personal debit card, a driver’s license, and a concealed-carry permit. Ramsey urges families to use cash and recommends that they employ an envelope system, which involves putting a cash allocation for each month’s food, entertainment, and other expenses in separate envelopes and then spending just what is in the envelope. He advises against taking on student loan debt and dismisses the notion that student loans are essential for college as a “fiction.”
