Meltzer graduated from San Jose State University with a journalism degree and began his career as a journalist for the Wichita Falls Times Record News and the Turlock Journal. He showed an early interest in professional wrestling and a journalistic approach to it. Meltzer was the author of various wrestling-related periodicals prior to WON, dating back to 1971. The most prominent of these was the California Wrestling Report, published between 1973 and 1974, which provided information on the still-existing National Wrestling Alliance territory based in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter began in 1980, when Meltzer initiated an annual survey among people with whom he interacted about professional wrestling. Meltzer claims that he was only a fan at first.
