Following ESPN’s loss of its NASCAR broadcasting rights, Burns rejoined NBC (which took over from TNT and ESPN after outbidding both networks for the TV coverage) and joined Mike Massaro (who also left ESPN), Marty Snider (who covered NASCAR on NBC alongside Burns from 2001 to 2006), and Kelli Stavast as one of four pit reporters for the network’s Cup and Xfinity Series (formerly Nationwide) events. On November 6, 2014, NBC signed Burns and Massaro to join the broadcast crew. Since working in the NASCAR industry, he has lived in Concord, North Carolina, which is in the Charlotte metropolitan area where NASCAR teams are based.
