Daphne Rubin-Vega Rent and Broadway

Rubin-Vega landed an audition for a new musical written and composed by Jonathan Larson while performing with El Barrio USA. Mimi Marquez, a nineteen-year-old HIV-positive heroin addict who works as an exotic dancer at the Cat Scratch Club, was cast in the Broadway musical Rent. Rubin-Vega claims that she was not a big fan of the musical theater before landing the role. The struggling actress sang “Roxanne” by The Police as an audition for musical director Tim Weil. She was then given an original number from the production and instructed to memorize it.

Rubin-Vega appeared in the play’s first workshop before it was staged on Broadway. The script at the time was vastly different from the current version. She worked on the role until its Broadway debut on April 29, 1996. Marcy Harriell took her place in the cast on April 5, 1997. Rubin-Vega did not appear in the film adaptation of Rent because she was pregnant at the time of casting and filming. Rosario Dawson was eventually cast in the role. Wilson Jermaine Heredia, with whom she co-starred in the 1999 film Flawless, was one of her co-stars.
