Dann Florek is a film director and actor from the United States. On NBC’s Law & Order and its spinoff Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, he played New York City Police Captain Donald Cragen, and on L.A. Law, he played Dave Meyer (1988–1993).

Florek rose through the ranks of supporting actors in films such as Sweet Liberty, Moon Over Parador, and Angel Heart in the 1980s. He also appeared in the live-action film adaptation of The Flintstones as Mr. Slate. Florek appeared in 22 episodes of NBC’s hit drama L.A. Law beginning in 1988 as Dave Meyer, the husband of Susan Ruttan’s character, Roxanne Melman. Florek also played the high school gym coach in the WB sitcom Smart Guy and appeared in several episodes of Roseanne. Florek co-starred as Capt. Don Cragen in the NBC police procedural and legal drama television series Law & Order beginning in 1990.

Dann returned to Los Angeles in the 1980s, where he performed on stage at the La Jolla Playhouse and Globe Theatre (“Big River,” “The Three Cuckolds”) while looking for film and television work. He eventually found a “working class” niche in TV crime dramas, playing down-to-earth, pragmatic officials. “Hill Street Blues,” “The Equalizer,” “Matlock,” “21 Jump Street,” Beverly Hills Buntz,” and “Almost Grown” are among his series credits. Dann also appeared as the husband of secretary Roxanne (series regular Susan Ruttan) on L.A. Law (1986). He also established himself as a consistent supporting actor and recognizable face in films such as Eddie Macon’s Run (1983) (debut), Sweet Liberty (1986), Angel Heart (1987), Sunset (1988), and Moon Over Parador (1989). Florek would land a long-term role as Captain Cragen on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1990). He reprised his role in the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit spin-off series (1999). He was the supervisor for over two and a half decades. Despite his busy schedule, he found time to appear on a few other shows, including a regular role on the short-lived baseball comedy Hardball (1994) and as a wacky Abraham Lincoln in the irreverent comedy The Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer (1998). He was also cast as a recurring coach on Smart Guy (1997). Since retiring from his TV role, he has been busy with theater productions such as “The Front Page” (Broadway revival, 2016) and “The Joy Wheel” (2019),
