On the first post-9/11 episode of Sex and the City, Sunjata played a sailor on shore leave. In the film Brother to Brother (2004), he played poet Langston Hughes, and in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), he played fashion designer James Holt. On the television show Rescue Me, he played firefighter Franco Rivera. During the summer of 2007, he also played Reggie Jackson in the ESPN miniseries The Bronx is Burning. In Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises (2012), he played a Special Forces Operative. In 2003, he received a Theatre World Award for his breakthrough Broadway performance in Take Me Out, about a gay Major League Baseball player who comes out to the public.
In 2010-2011, he starred as “Nurse Eli” on Grey’s Anatomy and was in a romance with Dr. Miranda Bailey. Beginning in 2013, he portrayed FBI agent Paul Briggs on USA Network’s Graceland. After three seasons, the show was discontinued in 2015. Sunjata announced his participation as narrator in Loose Change 9/11: An American Coup on April 30, 2009. This was the final documentary in the Loose Change series, which contends that the September 11 attacks were orchestrated by the US government.
