Dan Froomkin Presswatchers
In her book, Presswatchers, Heather Cox Richardson emphasized the inability of US press companies to communicate the existential battle for rule of law during the Select Committee hearings on the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Froomkin advised journalists to explain events in the context of Republican efforts to destabilize democracy.
Froomkin also released an essay on August 26, 2022, in its newsletter, Presswatchers, and online, examining how the media is failing to adequately explain the risks seen in Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ policies, actions, and campaigning statements.
He believes that the media is failing to play its proper duty in a democracy by reporting in a “neutral” manner in order to look “fair” and by use euphemisms that fail to express the danger of what should be conveyed.
This failure is referred to as “journalistic malpractice” by Froomkin, who believes it may be found even in highly regarded media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and national broadcast media. He contrasts this with the forthright reporting of media outlets such as the Cleveland Plain Dealer and gives advice to the media to prevent complacency.
On October 13, 2023, Froomkin addressed the Washington Post’s announced layoffs as a result of their adoption of a “balanced” reporting strategy rather than stating the truth about contemporary risks moving to totalitarianism. He proposed that returning to the Post’s historical role in investigating Watergate may reverse the fall in readership and position it as a responsible leader among media outlets that are now hesitant to promote such a cause.
