Cummins appeared at the now-defunct Laugh’s Comedy Cafe open mic inside the Season Ticket bar near the Spokane Arena in 2000. Cummins competed in the Seattle Comedy Competition in 2001 and placed second. There he met David Crowe, with whom he formed COBDOG (Crowe On Bass, Dan On Guitar), a two-man stand-up and variety act whose highlight was having a radio-friendly version of one of their routines, “At The Coffee Shop,” included on The Bob & Tom Show best-of CD, Bob, And Tom Gone Wild. In 2003, the duo called it quits.
Cummins’ performance at the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival’s New Faces presentation in 2005 drew the attention of both Comedy Central and The Late Late Show talent booker. Cummins made his first appearance on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham in 2006, which was also his first performance taped for television. A month later, he made his network television debut on Craig Ferguson’s The Late Late Show. He also performed at the HBO Las Vegas Comedy Festival in 2006, which was his second major festival. Cummins began 2007 by appearing at the Comedy Central South Beach Comedy Festival and then booking over 100 college gigs at the NACA Nationals college booking convention in Nashville. In August, Cummins taped his debut television stand-up special, Comedy Central Presents Dan Cummins, at New York’s Hudson Theater. Cummins performed at approximately 100 schools in 2008, and he also made it to the semi-finals of Season 6 of Last Comic Standing.
Cummins also performed at the second-annual Rooftop Comedy Aspen Comedy Festival in June 2009. In 2009, he made two more television appearances: one on Byron Allen’s Comedy.TV and the other on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien the day before Thanksgiving. Cummins’ first nationally distributed CD, Revenge is Near, was released on June 23 through Warner Brothers Records in 2009. It reached No. 7 on the Billboard Comedy Charts, and Punchlinemagazine.com named it one of the top 10 comedy CDs of 2009. Cummins went to Santa Monica, California, in 2010 to work with Creative Artists Agency after appearing in season two of G4’s The International Sexy Ladies Show.
Cummins also tried his hand at producing a few television shows. Mike Newman, a filmmaker, has been recording a documentary on Cummins’ stand-up career since early 2009. In September 2014, Cummins opened for Hughie Stone Fish, a Los Angeles-based recording artist, on his “Siren Songs” tour.
