Balz has worked as the Washington Post’s National Editor, Political Editor, White House correspondent, and Texas-based Southwest correspondent. Balz occasionally appears on Meet the Press and is a regular on the PBS program Washington Week. Balz received the renowned Merriman Smith Award for excellence in presidential coverage under deadline constraint from the White House Correspondents’ Association in April 2011. Storming the Gates: Protest Politics and the Republican Revival, co-authored by Balz and Ronald Brownstein of the Los Angeles Times, was published in 1996. Balz won the American Political Science Association prize for political coverage in 1999.
Balz’s most recent book, The Battle for America 2008: The Story of an Extraordinary Election, was co-written with Pulitzer Prize winner Haynes Johnson in 2009. It includes exclusive interviews with then-candidates Barack Obama and John McCain, as well as many of their top advisers during the campaign and election, and is based on two years of reporting. Balz worked for the Freeport Journal Standard after graduating from college and before entering the military, covering the 1968 Democratic National Convention and rioting. Before coming to The Washington Post, he worked as a reporter and deputy editor for National Journal and as a reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
