Career
Evans is best known as an actor who played Lionel Jefferson in the long-running comedy The Jeffersons (1975), but he was also an accomplished singer and actor. Born in Baltimore, he graduated from Michigan’s Interlochen Art Institute with a Reader’s Digest Scholarship. After graduation, he studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music. While in Boston, he appeared in the Boston Theater Company’s productions of Two Are the Seas, Hair, and December. His off-Broadway credits include A Day in Everyone’s Life, Bury the Dead for Urban Arts Corp, and Love Me, Love My Children. He made his Broadway debut in “Nobody Knows Me.” His other Broadway credits include revivals of “Matthew” in “Galactica” and “Lost in the Stars.” Evans also toured the “Judas” and “Jesus Christ” shows in the authorized concert of the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar”; I Can’t Do It was written by Mitch Grant. Although Evans is now less well-known in film and television, he continues to entertain audiences across the country with his diverse performances and music.
