Cooper Hefner Career

Hefner began working for Playboy Enterprises, Inc. while still in college.  Hefner, who was a board observer at the time, left the company in early 2016 due to disagreements with then-CEO Scott Flanders about the company’s direction. Hefner then began editing, writing, and publishing op-ed pieces on topics such as politics, culture, and philosophy. Hefner founded the media startup Hop (Hefner Operations & Productions) in 2016, with a focus on content and social events for millennials. After Hugh Hefner stepped down as Playboy’s chief creative officer in July 2016, Hefner returned to the company. Hefner announced in February 2017 that nude images would be returned to the magazine, stating that the problem had been the presentation of nude images.

Hefner also oversaw the decision to feature Playboy’s first transgender playmate in the November issue’s centerfold. Following Hefner’s return to the company, Playboy’s earnings increased by more than 39 percent year over year in 2017. The Wall Street Journal reported in January 2018 that Playboy Enterprises’ controlling shareholder was considering discontinuing the US print edition of Playboy Magazine, citing losses of up to $7 million per year in recent years.  Hefner was named to The Folio: 100 lists in 2017 for his contributions to the magazine media industry, and he was also named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2018.

Hefner took over as Playboy Enterprises’ chief of global partnerships in January 2019. He would prioritize revenue and business development over content and media management in that role. In April 2019, Playboy Enterprises CEO Ben Kohn announced that Hefner would leave his senior position at Playboy to launch the Hefner Media Corporation and HefPost, a digital content platform. Later, after leaving Playboy, Hefner announced his new digital content platform, StagDaily, on his Instagram and Twitter accounts in July 2019. In December 2019, Hefner abandoned plans to launch a media company and digital content platform in favor of joining the United States Air Force. He previously served in the California State Military Reserve.
