Donnell has appeared in a number of national stage productions, including Mamma Mia! and Wicked. His Broadway Theatre debut was as Hank Majewski in Jersey Boys. Follies, Meet Me in St. Louis, Johnny Baseball, and many more are among his other stage credits.[6][clarification required] He was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical, an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, and an Astaire Award for Outstanding Male Dancer for his performance as Billy Crocker in the 2011 Broadway revival of Anything Goes. Donnell made his television debut in the television series Pan Am as Mike Ruskin. Donnell was cast as Tommy Merlyn in the television series Arrow in 2012.
Donnell played Berowne in the musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour’s Lost in July and August of 2013. He also played the husband of Elizabeth Banks in the crime thriller Every Secret Thing, which was released on May 15, 2015. Donnell was cast as Monty alongside Sutton Foster and Joshua Henry in the 1960s-era Broadway musical Violet in January 2014; previews began on March 28, and the show officially opened on April 20. Donnell was cast as Joshua Jackson’s brother in the Showtime original drama The Affair in July. He appeared in the City Center Encores! production of Lady, Be Good in 2015, alongside Tommy Tune, Erin Mackey, and Patti Murin.
In March 2015, Donnell appeared in Love Is A Four Letter Word, an NBC pilot in which he played Sean, an ad agency partner; the show was not renewed for a second season. Donnell then landed a regular role as a trauma surgeon on the NBC series Chicago Med. Donnell announced her departure from the series on April 19, 2019, after four seasons as a series regular.
