Donaldson debuted on Survivor: The Australian Outback (2001) as a member of the Ogakor tribe, which was split into two alliances led by bartender/actress Jerri Manthey and Keith Famie and Tina Wesson. Following the removal of two Ogakor members, Donaldson voted with Wesson’s alliance against a member of Manthey’s alliance and singer-songwriter Mitchell Olson, resulting in a 3-3 tie and then the 2-2 retie.
Ten overall contestants remained at the Barramundi tribe, five from each tribe. Keith Famie, an ex-Ogakor member, won the season’s first Individual Immunity challenge, making ex-Kucha members unable to vote against Famie, resulting in a 5-5 tie and then a 4-4 retie.
In the second tie, Varner was eliminated based on previous Council votes against him, whereas votes against Donaldson had never been cast before. The ex-Ogakors had the majority and voted out another ex-Kucha member. Donaldson won the season’s final immunity challenge, “Fallen Comrades,” when only three players remained.
Donaldson, as the only player eligible to vote while wearing the Individual Immunity necklace, voted off Famie, placing him third, and keeping Wesson as promised. Donaldson and Wesson revealed their own core alliance at the Final Tribal Council, which helped keep the Ogakor tribe strong. By a 3-4 jury vote, Donaldson finished second to winner Tina Wesson, earning $100,000 (equivalent to $153,000 in 2021). Donaldson competed in Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains (2010) for the third time as a member of the Heroes tribe, which lost four members early in the season after losing four of five tribal immunity challenges. Donaldson then secretly arranged for the elimination of the Borneo winner and another Mogo Mogo tribe member, Richard Hatch, whom Donaldson saw as a threat, making Hatch the fifth player eliminated. Donaldson was eliminated by a 3-2 vote after asserting leadership for Mogo Mogo, despite his efforts to oust The Australian Outback returnee Jerri Manthey. Donaldson was voted the sexiest Survivor male player during the reunion show.
