Lee attended the University of Kentucky for a short time before dropping out to work for the local educational radio station on campus as a freshman. He began working for two commercial radio stations and a television station within a year. Clyde Lee did not complete his education at UK. Lee then worked at TV stations in Paducah, Lexington, and Tupelo, Mississippi, before relocating to Memphis to co-anchor early and late evening newscasts. In August 1976, he joined WRTV in Indianapolis, working mostly with Howard Caldwell and Diane Willis, but also with Martha Weaver and Barbara Lewis. In August 2001, he resigned from WRTV.
Lee founded Lee-Willis Communications, a public relations and crisis communications consulting firm that trains corporate executives to deal with the media. A minor controversy arose when WRTV reported that one of its former anchors had received $30,000 from a high school for public relations work. Not only did the school hire them, but also several other small public relations firms. Due to budgetary constraints, all contracts were terminated.
