He is the father of William, Marcellus, and Celsa, and the husband of the Frankish Princess Gisla. Rollo was known as a fearsome Viking warrior with an impulsive streak and internal struggles prior to his marriage.
Rollo, along with his brother Ragnar, takes part in the Norsemen-Balts Battle and witnesses Eric Trygvasson’s execution. He joins Ragnar on the first raid to England and expresses his feelings for Lagertha. Rollo discovers Ragnar talking to a Christian named Athelstan during the raid on Lindisfarne’s monastery and attempts to kill him, but Ragnar forbids it. Following the bloodshed on the beach, the Vikings invade Hexam, unleashing a wave of violence and panic. Despite Earl Haraldson’s efforts to bribe Rollo, he testifies in his brother’s defense and is acquitted.
The Northumbrian bishop baptizes Rollo in the river and gives him the Christian name Rolf, but Floki chastises him for offending their Norse gods. He then joins Ragnar and his family on their pilgrimage to Uppsala, where he engages in riotous behavior and is invited to join Jarl Borg in his rebellion against King Horik.
