Morris was accused of running a Ponzi scheme involving the sales of some residences in C- and D-class areas through his investment company, Morris Invest, in Indianapolis, Indiana, according to more than two dozen complaints filed in Indiana and New Jersey in March 2019.
The investors claim they were sold rental properties that Morris Invest promised to renovate and rent out for a profit. Some claim they then learned the properties from which they had been getting rental money were boarded up and abandoned, and that they began receiving city code and country health department fines. Others discovered they had purchased vacant land, little shacks, or dilapidated structures.
Morris had relocated the family to a tourist town on the Portuguese coast by July 2019. The Morrises claim they and numerous members of their family lost money as a result of former business partner Bert Whalen’s deceptive business practices at Oceanpointe Investments.
Whalen is accused of misappropriating funds given to him for purchases, renovations, and property management charges, as well as falsifying paperwork when questioned for updates and receipts. The Morrises plan to take on the suits from afar. Officials from the federal and state governments refused to say whether or not a criminal inquiry was underway.
Morris was awarded $7.2 million in a copyright infringement action against HoltonWiseTV in March 2020. Morris filed the complaint in Federal Court in October 2019 after HoltonWiseTV produced a three-hour series exploring Morris’ alleged involvement in multiple real estate frauds. Morris, among others, was sued by the state of Indiana in May 2020 for allegedly breaching Indiana’s fraudulent sales and home loan acts in real estate transactions involving more than 150 houses in Marion County.
