Jarman was 10 years old and in fifth grade in Nashville when MGM Studios discovered him in a worldwide talent hunt and cast him as the star in the picture The Yearling (1946). His performance got rave acclaim, earning him a special Academy Award as 1946’s finest child actor. He completed his education at the MGM Studio School and produced a total of 11 pictures. By his early twenties, he had decided to leave his cinematic career behind. He was cast in a few of B-movies by Republic Studios, but he was disappointed and returned to Tennessee to complete his college education at Vanderbilt University. After studying pre-law at Vanderbilt, Jarman starred in Disney’s.

Jarman switched to working behind the scenes. He oversaw the San Francisco International Film Festival for 15 years (1965-1980) and was recognized for his in-depth retrospectives of film stars and directors. He was an executive producer of the music documentary film Fillmore (1972), about rock mogul Bill Graham. He made a brief return to acting in 1978 for the television miniseries Centennial. As a previous acting award winner at the Oscar Family Album retrospectives, he appeared as a special guest on the 70th and 75th Academy Awards telecasts in 1998 and 2003, respectively. He was the director of cultural affairs for the City of San Francisco. He created Jarman Travel Inc. in 1986 to meet the travel demands of firms and executives.
