His career began with The St. Petersburg Times, where he covered city hall, law enforcement, and court beats. “The $40 lawyer” was Goffard’s last story for the St. Petersburg Times.[7] Goffard joined the Los Angeles Times as a staff writer in January 2006. Snitch Jacket, his first crime fiction, was a nominee for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best First fiction in 2008. In 2011, he published his second non-fiction book, You Will See Fire: A Search For Justice In Kenya (2012). Goffard’s two-part series sparked the first Los Angeles Times ebook, A Nightmare Made Real. In October 2017, Goffard also began his podcast Dirty John, which was eventually converted into a TV series of the same name.

Goffard was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting team that wrote “How Bell Hit Bottom” in 2010. Goffard was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for feature writing in 2007.
