Clarey began his media career as an intern at The San Diego Union-Tribune, where he covered local sports, notably the NFL’s Chargers. He relocated to Paris in 1991 to work as a freelance reporter. Later that year, he received his first byline in The New York Times for a story of French ice dancing twins Paul and Isabelle Duchesnay, thanks to a recommendation from his former editor at the Union-Tribune. He continued to write for the Times and, in 1998, was named the International Herald Tribune’s main sports correspondent. Clarey “has a claim to be the doyen of English-language tennis journalism,” according to the London Times in 2021.
Clarey’s biography of Roger Federer, The Master, was released on August 24, 2021, as Federer’s tennis career drew to a close. Clarey had extensively watched Federer throughout his career and apparently interviewed him more than any other journalist. According to recent reviews in The London Times, The Master is the best book on Federer ever written. Clarey announced his departure from the Times in May 2023 to focus on writing books and launching a Substack newsletter, Christopher Clarey’s Tennis & Beyond.
