Norman first became interested in music when he was a child. He enjoyed listening to musicians such as Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Lonnie Donegan, and others who influenced his musical style. Chris met Alan Silson and Terry Uttley at St. Bede’s Grammar School and they became his official band members when they were teenagers. The Beatles and The Rolling Stones influenced their musical style as a band. Initially, Norman and Silson got together to work on and learn new songs on their guitars. They eventually convinced Uttley to join them, along with Rori Kelly, who became their professional drummer.

Their first name as a band was The Yen, then The Elizabethans, before settling on Smokie before Rori Kelley left the band in 1975. After signing a record label deal, Chris and the guys began touring the world from 1974 to 1975. Norman and his fellow band members were responsible for other hits such as Kevin Keegan’s Head Over Heels I Live and The England Football Team song, as well as working on a number of solo albums for various UK artists. Norman launched his solo career in 1986 with the release of his debut single, Midnight Lady. He followed up his release with another single from Some Hearts Are Diamond, No Arms Can Ever Hold You, and Broken Heroes. He was then honored by CMT Europe as their International Video Star of the Year.
