She is a successful screenwriter and television producer, well known for his work on Happy Days in the 1970s. Duclon encouraged his niece’s ambition to act and got her an audition. After two seasons as executive producer of NBC’s Silver Spoons, Duclon successfully offered the network a new pilot about an orphaned young girl who is taken in by a curmudgeonly older man. Brandon Tartikoff, NBC’s programming president, approved the premise and called the titular character and series Punky Brewster (after a girl he knew in his adolescence). NBC cast Johnson as Punky’s (Soleil Moon Frye) best friend, a character she modeled and named herself.
Johnson began playing Maxine “Max” Johnson, Laura Winslow’s best friend (Kellie Shanygne Williams), on Family Matters in 1990, and continued in the role until the show’s finale in 1998. Duclon was once again her boss, as he was an executive producer on Family Matters during Johnson’s tenure there. In addition to her main roles, Johnson has appeared as a guest on The Parkers and voiced a character in the Disney Channel animated series The Proud Family. She has also appeared on Days of our Lives. Johnson began film production in the early 2000s. In 2009, she authored, starred in, and produced the film I Do… I Did!. In 2010, she appeared in several films, including Lights Out and Nobody Smiling.
In 2020, NBC announced a 10-episode resurrection of Punky Brewster on Peacock streaming service. Soleil Moon Frye and Johnson reprised their roles. Johnson and her I Do…I Did! co-writer co-authored a poetry book called Two Different Walks of Life, which was released on April 14, 2011. Peaches & Cream was her second novel, and Stupid Guys Diary, a collection of diary entries, was released in August 2014. Little Cherie Dresses Herself, a children’s book, was released in 2016. She is also the associate editor of Fever magazine, the former executive director of Dimez magazine, and a contributing writer for Temptation magazine and Glam Couture magazine, where she wrote a monthly column called “Cherie Picking”.
