Williamson took part in “speech tournaments” in high school, where he competed against other students. Because he had been playing in theatre for the majority of his life, he entered the University of Southern California’s theatre department with the intention of becoming a professional stage performer. One of the first auditions Williamson had after graduating from USC was for the role of David in John Dies in the End, which he won; it was his first professional picture. Rob Mayes, Clancy Brown, and Paul Giamatti co-star in the film, which premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
He played Moritz in the theatre musical Spring Awakening. Critics praised his performance, with several considering him the star performer. In Sparks, a superhero noir film based on the comic novel of the same name, he played the title character. In addition to Williamson and Brown, the picture stars Ashley Bell, William Katt, Jake Busey, and Clint Howard. Following its premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival in 2013, the film was released digitally and on DVD in March 2014. That same year, he was cast in the second season of Video Game High School. He plays one of the show’s antagonists, Shane Pizza. He also appeared alongside Dan Stevens in The Guest. The film had its world premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.
