Rose was born as the only child of Margaret (née Frazier) and Charles Peete Rose Sr., tobacco farmers who ran a rural store. Rose grew up above his parents’ store in Henderson and began working in the family business at the age of seven. Rose stated in a Fresh Dialogues interview that as a child, his restless curiosity was continually getting him into trouble.
Rose, a high school basketball player at Henderson High School in his hometown, enrolled at Duke University with the intention of pursuing a degree on a pre-med track; nevertheless, he grew interested in politics while interning at the office of Democratic North Carolina Senator B. Everett Jordan. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1964. At Duke, he belonged to the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity. He received his J.D. from Duke University School of Law in 1968. He met his first wife, Mary (King), while at Duke.

In 1992, he started dating Amanda Burden, a socialite and former New York City Planning Commissioner and the stepdaughter of CBS founder William S. Paley. On March 29, 2006, after experiencing shortness of breath in Syria, he was evacuated to Paris and underwent mitral valve repair surgery at the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital. His surgery was overseen by Alain Carpentier, a pioneer in the treatment. Rose returned on the air on June 12, 2006, alongside Bill Moyers and Yvette Vega (the show’s executive producer), to discuss his surgery and recovery. In February 2017, he revealed that he would have another surgery to replace the valve.

On November 15, 2011, it was reported that Rose will return to CBS to co-anchor CBS This Morning, which would replace The Early Show beginning January 9, 2012, alongside Gayle King and Erica Hill. Rose was a journalist for 60 Minutes II from its launch in January 1999 to its discontinuation in September 2005, and she was selected a correspondent for 60 Minutes in 2008.
