She worked as a reporter and editor for the North Texas Daily during her undergraduate years. She also worked for the Denton Record-Chronicle while in college, first in the press room, then as a sports stringer covering Denton County high school football and as a freelance lifestyles writer. Fern worked as a writer and lifestyles editor for the Galveston Daily News after graduation until she was offered a reporting position at the San Diego Union-Tribune six months later. Charlie, at the age of 23, was elevated to managing editor of Universal Press Syndicate’s A&M Publications after a year. She authored, edited, and directed news content for four publications in north San Diego County, including the daily newspaper The Vista Press.
In the mid-1990s, she worked in Governor Ann Richards’ state office, writing proclamations and greetings. She later worked as a press officer and speechwriter for First Lady Laura Bush. She served in that position until the 2000 presidential campaign, when she transferred to the Texas Attorney General’s Office to work as a press adviser and principal copywriter for then-Attorney General John Cornyn. In January 2001, she relocated to Washington, D.C., to work as Mrs. Bush’s personal wordsmith and spokesman. On November 8, 2001, the First Lady delivered an address to the National Press Club prepared by Fern in which she discussed the 9/11 terrorist attacks and how they had become a defining tragedy for children.
Fern joined Merck & Co.’s public affairs team in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, in November 2003. She returned to Austin, Texas, after a year to start a family and the Charlie Fern Ink consulting firm. She was the Friends of Texas Public Schools’ vice president. She also served as HomeAway’s vice president of worldwide communications beginning in 2018. Fern is the owner and principal of Charlie Fern Ink, LLC, an Austin-based communications company. She works with nationally renowned and recognized leaders and executives, celebrities, musicians, media, public and private organizations, and non-profits to provide public relations, publicity, promotions, writing, and strategic messaging services. She travels the country giving lectures on communication-related issues.
She continues to write speeches on a limited basis. Fern’s remark on young children reading less, delivered by Laura Bush to the Association of American Publishers in March 2008, made national news when it was picked up by Scripps Howard News Service. “That’s not because they can’t read,” Mrs. Bush explained. It’s because they believe they don’t like reading.” From 2009 to 2012, she was also an adjunct professor at St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. During the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association’s annual convention in Dallas in 2016, Fern was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
