During his studies, he honed his journalistic talents by editing the university’s student newspaper, Togatus, and was a member of the Old Nick Company, a student theater group. In 1970, he traveled to Launceston to work as a cadet for The Examiner. He went to Perth after joining ABC Radio. He quickly transitioned to television, where he worked on This Day Tonight, Nationwide, and Four Corners. He later became the ABC’s European correspondent in London. He joined Channel Nine and worked on Sunday before moving on to A Current Affair. Wooley began working for 60 Minutes in 1993. His interview with New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in 2018 was dubbed sexist and ‘creepy.’ Wooley was elected to the Sorell Council as Deputy Mayor and Councillor at the 2022 Tasmanian Local Government Elections.

Traveling Tales is a book of stories he wrote while traveling the world as a reporter. Wooley moved back to Hobart with his second wife Alona in 1999 to raise their three children. Wolley hosted Charles Wooley Across Australia, a regional morning program on Macquarie Regional RadioWorks, from January 2006 until November 2008. The show ran daily from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on over 40 radio stations around Australia.
