This move was welcomed and hailed by Billboard as “the heir to Sylvester’s vacant throne”. This led to collaborations with music superstars such as Thea Austin (Snap! Rhythm Is A Dancer), Steve Bronski (Bronski Beat), Group Factory (Italy), Jeanie Tracy).
Music led Carell to talk radio; where he and his co-host Andrew Howard (1966-2001) made history by becoming the first gay couple to come out while driving to the two of us on KFI AM 640 in Los Angeles. After Howard’s death, Carell fought as a partner in a wrongful death lawsuit and eventually decided to change the law, allowing the case to proceed and paving the way for other members of the GLBT community. After leaving KFI, Karel went to San Francisco’s #1 radio station, KGO AM 810 (where he remained) and co-hosted national programs through his production company, KDW Productions, and Genesis Communication Network (GCN).
