He graduated with honors from Williston Academy and earned a B.A. in English from Yale University. After a brief stint teaching cinema history at Yale, Eglee relocated to California and began working for Roger Corman in a number of production jobs, where he met then-production designer James Cameron. Piranha II: The Spawning was co-written by Eglee and Cameron. He then created and directed the mutant rodent flick Deadly Eyes. Eglee joined the St. Elsewhere writing staff as a story editor in 1984. He went on to become the writer and executive producer of the ABC show Moonlighting. Eglee co-wrote and executive-produced the one-hour television pilot Rockenwagner for Twentieth Century Fox Television.
Eglee joined Steven Bochco Productions in 1991 and wrote and co-executive produced the ABC series Civil Wars for two seasons, while simultaneously writing for L.A. Law. In 1993, he co-created and executive produced The Byrds of Paradise, a short-lived ABC series starring Timothy Busfield, Seth Green, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Following the conclusion of the show, Eglee joined the second season of NYPD Blue as a writer and co-executive producer. He co-created Murder One with Steven Bochco in 1995 and served as the show’s executive producer. Eglee co-created and executive-produced Total Security for ABC, which starred James Belushi and James Remar. Eglee and James Cameron collaborated once more on Dark Angel, a futuristic drama starring Jessica Alba and set in a dystopian 21st-century Seattle.
Eglee became an executive producer on the FX police drama The Shield in 2003. For the third season of the Showtime drama Dexter, Eglee served as a writer and executive producer. In 2009, he returned as a writer and executive producer for the fourth season. In 2010, he was a writer and executive producer for the first season of The Walking Dead’s television adaptation, reuniting him with The Walking Dead series creator and showrunner Frank Darabont, who had helmed an episode of The Shield’s sixth season. Eglee was the showrunner for American Gods’ third and final season.
