Charles Aaron is an American music journalist and editor who formerly worked for Spin magazine for 23 years. Charles began his career in journalism at AdWeek and Sassy magazines. He worked as a music journalist for Spin magazine and other publications such as Rolling Stone, Village Voice, and Vibe before becoming a full-time employee.

Spin was founded in 1985 as an alternative music magazine. Aaron began contributing to Spin magazine in 1991, about the time that hip hop music was becoming popular among white audiences. In one article, he refers to himself as a “white hip hopper” and claims to have written several essays for the magazine in praise of the genre throughout the years. In 1993, he penned his first story for the magazine about Snoop Dogg’s father. He joined the Spin magazine team in 1996. He joined the magazine as a music editor in 1998 and 2002. Aaron was promoted to editorial director in 2011. BuzzMedia (formerly SpinMedia) took over the magazine in 2011, cutting staff and making other adjustments.
He was appointed editor at large in 2013. Aaron’s last issue of Spin magazine was published in February 2014. Aaron went on to write for Rolling Stone and Wondering Sound after leaving Spin. Aaron got an award for his article “Remembering Notorious B.I.G.” which was reprinted in the March 2010 issue of Spin. On the occasion of Aaron’s final issue (February 2014), Spin reproduced some of his best music journalism, including “‘Sir Real'” on Snoop Doggy Dogg from 1993. Aaron coordinated the usage of applications that allowed audiences to listen to musicians while reading about them or remix dance tracks using app capabilities as editorial director. Amanda Petrusich, a music critic, says she was influenced by Aaron’s music journalism for Spin magazine.

Spin’s Charles and Sia Michel received the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award in 2000 for their coverage of Notorious B.I.G.’s career, which featured in the magazine’s January 1998 edition. Aaron also received a National Arts Journalism Fellowship from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in 2000. Spin’s iPad version was selected a nominee for the American Society of Magazine Editors’ Ellie Awards in 2012.
