She rose to prominence after appearing in the 2009 reality television series 16 and Pregnant, which captured various young women’s pregnancies and initial months of motherhood. Later that year, she was cast in the spin-off series Teen Mom, which aired for four seasons before ending in 2012. Lowell returned to MTV in March 2015 for the show’s fifth season, dubbed Teen Mom OG. Baltierra and her now-husband Tyler also starred in Season 3 of the television show Couples Therapy.

Lowell and Baltierra launched their debut book, Conquering Chaos, in March 2015. The couple’s show Reunited, which helped adoptees reunite with their birth families, aired on MTV in December 2016 but was cancelled after only one episode. On November 17, 2017, Lowell posted to social media to inform fans that she was getting treatment after having suicide thoughts. Following a miscarriage, Lowell sought treatment for the third time in January 2018, citing childhood trauma as one of the causes of her mental health troubles in response to fan speculation on Twitter.
