Hall got her big break in 2008 when she was chosen to compete on the fifth season of Top Chef. Initially, she was in the middle of most episodes, but she finished first in the Thanksgiving challenge. She won Super Bowl XLIII tickets after impressing the judges with her crawfish gumbo in Episode 10. She went on to win two more challenges and finish in the top three in several others. Jacques Pépin, who said he could “die happy” after eating her fresh peas, and Emeril Lagasse, who said he loved her gumbo, were among those who praised her. However, she and Stefan Richter finished second to champion Hosea Rosenberg in the final challenge in New Orleans.
Hall rose to prominence on the show due to her outgoing personality, despite failing to win Fan Favorite in her season. She became famous for her call-and-response catchphrase “Hootie Hoo!” which she and her husband used to find each other in public. Hall was also known on Top Chef for her “cooking with love” philosophy, which she defined as putting one’s own care and warmth into food. She believes that if one is happy and calm while cooking, it will show in the food, making it much better, whereas if one is unhappy and agitated while cooking, it will degrade their cuisine.
Hall was a member of the cast of Top Chef: All-Stars, the eighth season of the show, which featured returning contestants from previous seasons. This season, she did well, including demonstrating her chicken pot pie recipe on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Hall finished fifth overall in the competition but was voted “Fan Favorite” by viewers of the show for the season, beating out Fabio Viviani, who was voted Fan Favorite over Hall when they both appeared in Season 5.
