Champion joins ESPN as the new anchor of ESPN2’s live debate shows First Take on October 1, 2012. She beat out Heidi Watney and Jemele Hill for the position. She conducted arguments between sports pundits Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith, whom she described as having “the biggest, strongest personalities in the building” as the show’s host.
Champion made her ESPN journalistic debut on November 4, 2014, when she profiled and interviewed American football player Cam Newton in an E:60 piece after pitching story ideas to the network. On the same day, she was the target of racist and sexist tweets from comic Artie Lange, who mocked himself and Champion in a sexual fantasy set during slavery.
The next day, Lange tweeted an apology to Champion, and ESPN published a statement to Sports Illustrated rebuking Lange’s tweets, although Champion did not respond publicly. Champion was promoted to the post of SportsCenter anchor in June 2015 after petitioning ESPN for six months. She hosted her final episode of First Take on June 19 and began anchoring SportsCenter morning broadcasts in July.
