Candice DeLong Career

DeLong worked as a psychiatric nurse at Northwestern University Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, before entering the field of criminal profiling. However, by the age of 28, she was a divorcee with a young son. DeLong moved to Quantico, Virginia, in 1980 to attend the FBI training academy in search of a new career. She was one of seven women enlisted. After graduating from Quantico, DeLong worked in the FBI’s Chicago office. DeLong stated that she used humor to relieve stress at work. She stated that her three career goals were to “be involved with a high-profile national criminal, apprehend a serial killer, and rescue a kidnap [sic] victim alive.”

DeLong became involved in the investigation of the Chicago Tylenol murders in 1982, in which seven people died after taking potassium cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules. Although no one was ever charged in connection with the poisonings, the incident resulted in new over-the-counter medication packaging and federal anti-tampering laws. DeLong commented on the incident, saying, “You can thank the Tylenol killer for the fact that it now takes a blow torch to get into a bottle of Tylenol.” DeLong was one of three FBI agents chosen in 1995 to lead the manhunt for Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber. Over a 17-year period, Kaczynski planted 16 bombs in strategic locations, killing three people. Following his capture in Lincoln, Montana in 1995, DeLong stated that “he only cared about two things.”

DeLong, a member of the Child Abduction Task Force in San Francisco, California, said the best day of her career was rescuing a nine-year-old kidnapping victim who had been given crack cocaine and forced to participate in child pornography. The boy was saved after the abductor’s location was discovered on a train in San Diego, California. Following her retirement from the FBI in July 2000, DeLong wrote a book titled Special Agent: My Life on the Front Lines as a Woman in the FBI. She discusses the criminal profiling process and how she assisted in the resolution of high-profile cases in the book. DeLong also devoted a chapter to personal safety in her book.
