Calvin has served as a news anchor in three of the top ten media markets in the United States, including Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Dallas. He’s also gone to Lexington, Kentucky, Evansville, Indiana, and Columbia, Missouri, where he began his radio career at the age of 19. Following a story on Haitian migrants who risked and, in some cases, lost their lives in a perilous voyage bound for the coasts of Miami in 2008, Hughes explored an opportunity to report thoroughly on the country. When the deadly 7.0 earthquake rocked the country two years later, Hughes was one of the first journalists in Port-au-Prince to capture the tragedy.
Calvin was named Miami’s best TV news anchor in 2011, with the Miami New Times praising him for reporting the story of Haiti’s earthquake “gracefully and professionally.” Calvin actively seeks opportunities to tell stories that speak to the heart of our community. He was one of only two South Florida journalists allowed to cover Pope Benedict XVI’s historic visit to Cuba live. Similarly, he left the anchor desk to bring live coverage of the Miami Heat’s four consecutive trips to the NBA Finals and two NBA championships, as well as the 2012 presidential debate at Lynn University.
