Dickerson began her professional career as an intern at National Public Radio. Following her internship, she worked as a producer at NPR before securing a position on the Investigations Desk. Dickerson reported in 2016 on the testing of mustard gas on American troops by the US military during WWII, with subjects divided by race. Her article, which was published as part of a two-part special investigation by NPR, found that the Department of Veteran Affairs had breached pledges made in the 1990s to find and compensate veterans who had suffered lifelong impairments as a result of the testing. In response to the report, Congress called for investigations and hearings, which resulted in the enactment of legislation compensating test subjects.
Dickerson joined The New York Times as a national immigration reporter in 2016. Dickerson broke multiple articles for the Times about undocumented immigrants’ deportation and detention. She reported on overcrowding and unclean conditions at a border station facility hosting hundreds of children in June 2019.
