Brian van de Graaff Career

Prior to his current position, he forecasted the weather for ABC7’s Good Morning Washington on weekday mornings and middays. Brian’s broadcasting career carried him from Salisbury, Maryland, through Richmond, Virginia, to New York City, and finally back to Washington, D.C. His passion for weather began at a young age, so it’s no surprise that after graduating from George Mason University, he went straight into the industry, shadowing his mentor, Doug Hill. One of Brian’s most vivid memories as a meteorologist is of his time in New Orleans just days before Hurricane Katrina.

The phrase “the calm before the storm” could not have been more apt than at that time—it was eerily quiet with a faint wind, the skies were dazzling blue, and long-time NOLA residents seemed unconcerned about the weather forecasts. One family member was pondering “waiting out the storm,” with hotel personnel boasting that “it is always so much fun when the storms come” and “we will take good care of you.” Everyone agreed that it was time to “get out of Dodge!” after Brian said, “It just wouldn’t look good for me to leave a family member in the path of a huge hurricane.”

Brian’s StormTrak7, the station’s mobile weather van, is frequently seen crisscrossing the region these days. The brightly painted car is equipped with high-quality weather instruments that are fantastic teaching tools for kids learning about weather and weather safety.

Brian’s achievement of Eagle Scout status as a young adult remains a source of pride for him. He strives to follow their beliefs and put some of the talents he learnt from the organization to good use. He’s trekked and backpacked across the United States, from the Appalachian Trail in the east to the Grand Canyon in the west, and everywhere in between. Brian’s main passion is traveling, and he has traveled across the United States and around the world, with his farthest journey being to Australia. He now aspires to collect the most points and miles in order to travel with his four-person family.
