Chief Hopper and Joyce Byers uncovered a Soviet clandestine operation at Hess Farm in 1985, which resulted in the capture of Dr. Alexei, a Russian scientist. Murray helped Joyce and Hopper disable the gate machine by breaking into the concealed base. The U.S. Army discovered them, but it appears that Hopper died in his last confrontation with Grigori.
Murray assisted Joyce in escaping a Kamchatka prison camp in March 1986 by helping her locate a note indicating Hopper was still alive. They went back to the prison to destroy a piece of “the Mind Flayer” that had been taken prisoner in order to harm the Upside Down’s collective psyche and save their pals who were in need.
